You can’t get much more classic than the waffle. Slap some butter and maple syrup on that baby and you’ve got yourself a warm, comforting, and filling breakfast (or lunch or dinner if you’re in our house).

To say our daughter loves waffles would be a gross understatement. I mean, her favorite birthday gift last year was a giant blanket with a waffle pattern. She wants to eat them daily, and not just for breakfast. With waffles being a staple of her diet, we wanted to find quality waffles, ideally with protein to help keep her belly full through the school morning.

It turns out she’s not alone. Frozen waffles is a $3 billion industry and growing. While there are some great options in the frozen section of the supermarket, they are not cheap. With each of our kids eating 1-2 waffles every day, we were going through waffles like there was no tomorrow. Little did we know we needed a waffle maker with removable plates.

Jump Ahead

No more waffling around…

After finding success with a waffle-themed blanket for her birthday, last Christmas we gifted our waffle-obsessed daughter a waffle maker! Truth be told, we wanted to save money and know what goes into our food considering she was consuming waffles by the metric ton. She was tickled nonetheless.

Having a solid waffle maker at home is perfect for batch making and freezing waffles. Throw them in the toaster (we use the defrost setting on ours) and you have breakfast served on busy school mornings.

Choosing a waffle maker for serious waffle lovers

Years ago we were gifted (sensing a theme here) a small Star Wars-themed waffle iron that makes awesome Death Star waffles. They look cool and taste great, but if we wanted to make these in mass, we needed a bigger machine and one that could easily be cleaned. Enter—removable plates!

After doing some research, we settled on the Krups Waffle Maker with removable plates.

  1. Krups is a trusted brand. They have been around a long time and have a good reputation.
  2. You had me at removable plates. One of the challenges of our single Star Wars themed waffle iron is that it is hard to clean. You can’t submerge waffle irons (hello, cord and electrical housing!) and doing a wipe down doesn’t get rid of all the grease.
  3. Four at a time! We had visions of pumping out waffles assembly line style in no time.
  4. Great reviews on Amazon. Done.

***We should note: we did not receive any products or money from Krups. We are simply a waffle-loving household and wanted to try this particular waffle maker.

Unboxing the Krups Waffle Maker

We were impressed immediately after opening the package. This waffle iron felt SOLID. It had a dial to choose doneness, was slim in profile for easy storing, and did I mention, had REMOVABLE PLATES!

There are small buttons on the top and bottom to easily remove the plates for cleaning. To fit them back into the iron you match up the arrows and push until you hear a “click.”

The Krups waffle iron will show a green light when it is ready. After the batter is placed and the waffles are ready, it then gives you a lovely little beep so you know the perfect time to open the machine back up again. You can also adjust the doneness with a dial.

Putting the waffle maker to the test

How much batter goes into the Krups Waffle Maker?

The trickiest part about using this iron, and maybe any waffle iron, is knowing how much batter to add to each square. You want a full waffle, but also don’t want overflow. The Krups directions call for a ½ cup batter in each square.

Being an eager beaver, we went with a rounded ½ cup in each square and got some overspill out the sides. We had some Mount Vesuvius-like excitement, but after some fast scraping with a spatula it proved to be a pretty harmless mess.

After having made five rounds of waffles, we have nearly perfected the filling amounts. If you put a level ½ cup, your waffles will come out looking like waffles and leave no mess.

How do you know when your waffles are done?

When the waffles are done, the waffle maker makes a beep sound. Following the lovely beep, I carefully removed all four square waffles and placed them on a wire rack to cool. I did this in rounds until the batter was gone.

It should be noted that there was a normal heating element smell for the first use, but went away for all subsequent uses.

Waffles fresh out of the waffle maker and ready to be frozen on a cookie sheet
Freeze waffles by cutting them in half and flash freezing them on cookie sheets before putting them in resealable bags.

What’s the best way to freeze homemade waffles?

Based on suggestions from other internet cooks, I cut them in half and flash froze them on cookie sheets. After a few hours, I placed them in large resealable bags and away into the freezer they went.

How do you reheat frozen homemade waffles?

When it’s breakfast time, we pop them into the toaster and out they come, perfectly browned, slightly toasted, smelling wonderful, and with delicious flavor. You can also heat them for 1 ½ – 2 minutes in the microwave and that’ll make for a softer product that’s perhaps a bit soggy at the bottom.

Verdict on the Krups Waffle Maker with removable plates

Positives:

  1. Super easy to clean thanks to removal plates.
  2. Slim profile once the cord is wrapped up.
  3. Beeps when waffles reach the chosen doneness.
  4. No sticking at all with the use of a cooking spray before adding batter.
  5. Handle stays fairly cool so it’s easy to open when waffles are ready.

Negatives:

  1. We wish the non-stick coating was listed as non-toxic. We only use rubber and silicone spoons and utensils so as not to damage the non-stick coating.

After finding the perfect waffle recipe, I can report that these waffles are an amazing addition in our mornings. Our son has now become a waffle aficionado and the whole family enjoys them almost every morning for breakfast.

Since we cut them into halves the kids can decide exactly how much they want, which is a plus since sometimes their eyes can be bigger than their stomachs.

Is a waffle maker a good gift?

This would be a perfect gift for anyone who loves waffles or busy families who wish to make freeze-ahead breakfasts. This has honestly saved our family so much time and money and allowed for a hot breakfast in no time on busy school mornings.

We have not delved into savory waffle options, but there is a whole other world for lunch and dinner-friendly waffles. This waffle iron with removable plates could be a great gift for someone who is into cooking and loves unique and versatile kitchen gadgets.

What other gifts would go well with this waffle maker?

If you are looking for a themed gift or a more sizable gift, you could pair this Krups Waffle Iron with Removable Plates with some related items, some helpful, some fun.

To help get your waffle extraordinaire off to a good start, you could pair the waffle iron with a box of delicious waffle mix so they can start their waffle operation on Day 1. Another useful option would be to pair your gift with a high-quality or interesting maple syrup. One of our favorite breakfast restaurants serves homemade strawberry syrup and OMG. It’s delicious. Why not switch things up with an unexpected syrup? Here are some highly-rated options.

We purchased a waffle iron recipe book not long after we got our first iron. Although it is aimed at a smaller waffle maker, the recipes could certainly be scaled for larger portions and sizes. It has a bunch of tasty looking recipes for both savory and sweet meals. To optimize their flipping, throw in a waffle tong. For those looking for a funny addition, these socks really just say it all.
