Want to know a fun little secret? One of our founding team members is a part-time acute care speech-language pathologist so this list has been expertly curated and chosen by someone who actually knows what SLPs want and need.

Who are speech therapists (SLPs)?

SLPs work in many settings and therefore may have different needs or wants when it comes to gifts. Because of the difference in settings and job styles, we have tailored our lists for both child or school-based SLPs and medical or adult-based SLPs.

Is it appropriate to get a speech pathologist a present?

Some facilities, such as hospitals, may have rules against staff accepting gifts. That said, most people are not going to turn away a heartfelt present (I never have!). Speech pathologists care a lot about their patients and give a ton of their heart and soul to their work. What better way to thank them than by acknowledging their value with a thoughtful gift.

If a gift does not feel like the best way to recognize your SLP, a hand-written card can be a meaningful way to let them know just how much you value and appreciate them. We have some unique thank you cards below should you want a more interesting card.

What are must-haves gifts for speech therapists?

SLP gifts to jazz up a work space or office

Presents that liven up an office will continue to add joy long after they have been received.

The speech therapy office can be where clients or patients have their therapy or where SLPs complete their documentation. SLPs typically spend a LOT of time in this space. Help them spruce up their surroundings and elevate the look of their workspace in a meaningful way.

Gifts for medical & hospital-based SLPs

Working in hospitals and clinics, Medical SLPs have unique needs.

Medical speech pathologists typically work in out-patient clinics or hospitals. They often work with individuals who have recently had medical emergencies and are critical in the early stages of recovery. This can make for challenging but satisfying work. These gifts will both bring much needed laughs and make their work life easier.

For those SLPs who work with children in medical settings, see kid-friendly gifts in the section below.

Gifts for school-based and pediatric SLPs

Pediatric speech therapists work closely with babies, children and their parents to support skills vital to growth and development.

Schools are often where people encounter speech therapists for the first time. School SLPs are a vital part of our educational system and have the important job of helping children learn to communicate, think and study more effectively. These gifts are perfect for our school-based speech therapists.

These items are aimed specifically at those working with children so may also be a good fit for medical-based SLPs working with kiddos.

Presents to make SLP life easier and better

Dazzle your favorite SLP with a gift that makes their job easier and helps them shine.

Sometimes it’s the random item that really adds to our job enjoyment or ease – the favorite clipboard or the go-to planner.

Traditional organization materials can be wildly helpful for a speech therapist, as can items that are designed to help explain concepts to patients/clients and their families, such as models or diagrams. You will find presents here to improve your SLP’s work day.

In this section, I have included a link to one of my favorite work items – the pocket flashlight. This particular one is rechargeable and comes as a set of 12, which would make for a perfect team gift because as any medical SLP will tell you, we look into a LOT of dark mouths each day!

Presents to help carry and organize

Speech therapists are frequently on the move, carrying everything from papers to toys to food.

Speech pathologists carry a LOT of stuff. Whether it’s games, bulky testing materials, or even foods, SLPs are often schlepping their goods from room to room. These gifts are perfect for organizing those items and making the haul easier.

SLP gifts that have a personal touch

Personal gifts are a terrific way to express your gratitude and appreciation.

If you want a gift that will treat and delight your speech-language pathologist as a person, look no further. These are the gifts they can wear and personally use on a daily basis.

How do you thank a speech therapist?

A heartfelt card is ALWAYS a wonderful way to say, “thank you.” Let your SLP know how they have impacted your life or your loved one’s life. I save every card or letter I receive and hang them on my office bulletin board. Never underestimate the impact of showing your appreciation.
